Course overview

This course gives you a grounding in the theory and practice of environmental management, and a sound understanding of managing and minimising environmental impacts.

This programme builds upon the HND, which forms the first two years of this programme. The course provides educational and training opportunities for potential and current employees in the environmental sector.

You will gain a solid understanding of climate change and the global environment, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), research skills and data analysis, environmental toxicology, integrated catchment management, community and project management, environmental economics, carbon management and more. You will be required to complete an honours project worth three credits to attain a honours degree.

It aims to raise levels of awareness for today's environmental concerns, teach related skills and knowledge and encourage a holistic approach to modern sustainable development and land management. This is achieved not by studying environmental issues alone, but by looking at them in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals and competing governmental priorities.

The programme offers an educational experience that is comprised of face to face teaching, site visits, workshops, self-guided study, seminars, visiting speakers and residential field trips.

This course provides students with key transferable skills and enables an articulated progression route to higher levels of learning from Honours Degree to postgraduate awards. It is assessed through a range of methods including practical, essays, reports, online tests, posters, presentations, podcasts, wiki development and exams.

The BSc programme received CIWEM accreditation (Chartered Institute for Water and Environmental Management) in 2020, providing external validation of the quality of the programme. It supports the aim of raising professional standards in the environmental sector by ensuring that the skillsets of our students meet the demands of the profession.

CIWEM accreditation offers many advantages such as networking through branch meetings and events, enhancing student career prospects and facilitating their path to Chartership. CIWEM membership is complimentary to students registered on the undergraduate programmes and lasts for the duration of your programme of study.

Previous graduates have either continued with their studies or started careers within the sector ranging from Environmental Managers to Health Practitioners, Waste Officers and Project Officers. Many of our alumni are invited back to SRUC to share their experiences with current students as part of SRUC’s collaboration with the industry.
