Course overview
If you’re interested in pursuing a new career in science and you’ve been away from education for 3-5 years, Access to Biological and Chemical Sciences, run in partnership with SWAP, might be for you. You’ll get a good grounding in biology, chemistry at Higher level and physics and Maths at National 5 level. This will give you the skills and knowledge you’ll need to apply to the first year of a life science-related degree or a relevant HNC. Not only that, but the course also offers intensive guidance to help you develop confidence, core skills and get the most out of your higher education journey.

During this Access to Biological and Chemical Sciences course you'll study:
- Biology (National 5 and Higher units)
- Chemistry (National 5 and Higher units)
- Maths (National 5 units)
- Physics (National 5 unit)
- Communications (Higher level)

Entry requirements
- This course is not aimed at recent school leavers. You must have a gap in your education of three years if you have previously studied at National 5 level, or equivalent, or five years if you have previously studied at Higher/HNC level.
- Entry to the programme is subject to interview and satisfactory performance in a core skills test covering basic numeracy, literacy and problem solving skills
- For progression to allied health professions such as Oral Health Science or Paramedic Science, you must have gained experience relevant to your chosen career path before applying for the course, for example, employment as a healthcare support worker, or shadowing of relevant professional. Please note a minimum of five years working as a qualified dental nurse if required to be considered for progression to Oral Health Science.
- Your personal statement forms an important part of the selection process. Please outline in the personal statement section of the application form your progression route (Paramedic Science, Oral Health Science, Life Science etc.), relevant experience you already have, transferrable skills from your current employment, any exceptional circumstances that impacted on your education so far, back up courses you have considered and why you think you are suitable for the course
- If English is not your first language you should have Higher ESOL at grade A/B
- A reference will not be required as standard but may be requested as part of the application process
