Course overview
The BPEC Domestic Air and Ground Source Heat Pump Systems course is aimed at experienced heating engineers. With increasing targets to cut carbon emissions, the introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) consumer demand for this renewable energy source is increasing. Candidates will be certificated for BPEC Heat Pumps Systems. This particular course is split into two areas which can be undertaken as individual areas or both (air and ground source).The course is nationally recognised and meets the training entry requirements for the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). Course description
Previously known as Heat Pump Systems / NOS Mapped, this course is split into two areas which can be undertaken as individual areas or both:
e.g. Heat Pump Technology + Air Source or Heat Pump Technology + Ground Source or Heat Pump Technology + Air and Ground Source.

- Heat pumps in context
- How a Heat pump works – principles and components
- Insulation, heat losses and the effect of heating system design
- Domestic hot water, buffer tanks and solar coils
- Ground heat exchangers
- Health and Safety
- Heat pump installation
- Maintenance and fault finding
Candidates will receive a BPEC Certification demonstrating skills and knowledge to install and maintain heat pump systems. It is recognised for the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) and is valid for 5 years.
This course does not lead to a regulated qualification and should not be confused with the Level 3 qualification.
As this course is categorised as part-time commercial training, it is not eligible for any fee waiver or funding via the College. The student is liable for the payment of fees, unless an external training grant or employer support is confirmed at time of booking.
Entry requirements
Candidates must be qualified plumbers or gas/heating engineers who hold:
- SVQ in Plumbing / Heating and Ventilating (Domestic or Commercial or Industrial installation including Unvented) / Oil-Fired Technical Services / Gas Installation and Maintenance OR;
- Minimum 3 years of experience installing wet central heating systems, evidenced by certification (e.g. ACS, OFTEC) AND;
- Water Byelaws 2014 (Scotland) / Water Regulations 1999 (if not included in SVQ)
Unvented Hot Water Storage Systems is beneficial for successful completion (attained in the last 5 years).
The College can include both Water Byelaws 2014 (Scotland) / Water Regulations 1999 and Unvented Hot Water Storage Systems if required.
Verification must be provided prior to booking for submission in the assessment pack.
